Climb Mount Meru.
Discover Tanzania from a new perspective.
Walk through forest and wildlife country, sleep in mountain huts, and follow a spectacular crater rim to the summit of Tanzania’s second-highest mountain.
More than a warm-up for Kilimanjaro
Mount Meru is a rewarding climb in its own right: a journey from wildlife-rich lower slopes to an impressive volcanic crater and a dramatic summit ridge.
Located in Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers a different kind of Tanzanian trekking experience. You may encounter wildlife on the lower slopes, pass through lush forest and climb above the clouds towards Socialist Peak. On clear days, Kilimanjaro can appear on the horizon.
The trek can also form part of a longer Tanzania adventure. Its altitude and sustained hiking provide useful preparation for Kilimanjaro, although climbing Meru does not guarantee acclimatization or prevent altitude sickness.

Prepare for the mountain
Mount Meru is a serious high-altitude trek. The summit day includes steep, rocky terrain, a night start and sections of exposed ridge. Good cardiovascular fitness, regular hill walking and suitable footwear will help you enjoy the experience.
Altitude affects people differently. Walk at a comfortable pace, tell your guide promptly about symptoms, and be prepared to descend if advised. Summit attempts depend on weather, route conditions and the judgement of the guide and ranger.
Generally, the drier periods of June to October and December to February are popular. Rain, cold and changing conditions are possible throughout the year.

Mount Meru trekking FAQs
How high is Mount Meru?
Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru, is approximately 4,566 metres above sea level.
Is Mount Meru suitable for beginners?
Fit first-time trekkers can consider it, but the altitude, steep ascent and exposed summit ridge make it challenging. Discuss your hiking experience, fitness and any health concerns with us before choosing an itinerary.
How long does it take to climb Mount Meru?
Most trekkers choose three or four days. The four-day option gives you an additional night on the mountain and breaks up the descent after the summit.
Where do we sleep on the mountain?
Trekkers normally stay in shared mountain huts at Miriakamba and Saddle. Facilities are basic; ask us what to bring and how accommodation is arranged.
Can I climb Mount Meru before Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Some travellers combine the two climbs. Meru provides useful experience at altitude, but it does not guarantee acclimatization or a Kilimanjaro summit. Allow appropriate recovery and discuss your overall itinerary with your guide.
Do I need a guide and ranger?
Mount Meru treks are accompanied by an armed park ranger because the route passes through wildlife habitat. Your guided trek also includes a mountain team; we will confirm arrangements in your quotation.
When is the best time to climb?
The drier months of June to October and December to February are popular, though conditions change and rain or cold can occur at any time. Contact us for advice on your preferred dates.
