Umbwe RouteKilimanjaro Climb
A steep forest trail. Dramatic southern slopes. One extraordinary summit. Discover Kilimanjaro’s demanding Umbwe approach with a local mountain team beside you.

About the Umbwe Route
The Umbwe Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, climbing sharply through dense rainforest before emerging onto an open ridge. Its quieter early stages and direct ascent attract trekkers looking for a strenuous mountain journey.
At Barranco Camp, the trail joins the Southern Circuit. Your journey continues over the Barranco Wall, through Karanga Valley and up to Barafu Camp. The summit attempt follows the path to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak, before descending via Mweka.
This six-day itinerary includes a night at Karanga, but the first two days still gain altitude quickly. Strong fitness helps with the terrain; it does not guarantee altitude adaptation.
Umbwe is best considered by experienced, fit trekkers after discussing their altitude experience with our team. If you prefer a more gradual ascent, explore our longer Lemosho itinerary.

6-Day Umbwe Route Itinerary
From the southern rainforest to Uhuru Peak. Explore each stage below, with arrival and departure arranged around your six mountain days.

Welcome to Tanzania
Meet your transfer team at Kilimanjaro International Airport and travel to your hotel in Moshi. Your guide reviews the climb, checks your equipment and answers final questions. Arrive at least one day before the trek begins.

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Step beneath the forest canopy and begin the steep southern approach.
Read full day details
After breakfast in Moshi, drive to the park registration point and trailhead. Once formalities are complete, begin on a forest track before the path narrows into a steep ridge. Roots, damp ground and sustained uphill walking make this a demanding opening day.
Keep your waterproof layers accessible. Your mountain crew prepares dinner and tents at Umbwe Camp, also called Umbwe Cave Camp. Settle in, eat well and discuss how you feel with your guide.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Umbwe Camp.

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Leave the forest behind as the ridge opens toward Kibo and Barranco Valley.
Read full day details
The climb continues over rockier ground as the trees thin and the landscape becomes more open. In clear weather, Kibo rises above the ridge. The trail eventually eases before descending into the striking Barranco Valley.
Arrive among giant groundsels beneath the Barranco Wall. This is a substantial increase in sleeping altitude, so keep your pace measured and tell your guide about any discomfort. Umbwe joins the busier southern trails here.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Barranco Camp.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall, then cross the valleys beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.

Start with the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble where you sometimes use your hands for balance. Follow your guide through the narrow sections and allow space for other climbers and porters. Standard conditions do not require technical climbing equipment.
From the top, continue across rolling terrain before descending into Karanga Valley and climbing to camp. Although the camps are at similar elevations, the repeated climbs and descents make this an active day. Enjoy a hot meal and an afternoon at camp.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Reach your summit base camp and prepare for the mountain’s longest day.
Read full day details
The trail climbs steadily across exposed alpine desert toward Barafu. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the rocky ground demands careful footing. Walk slowly and conserve energy as the altitude increases.
After reaching camp, organise your summit layers, headlamp, gloves and water. Your guide explains the overnight plan before an early dinner and rest. The summit attempt normally starts around midnight, depending on conditions and the team.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Barafu Camp.

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Make your summit attempt via Stella Point, then descend to the forest edge.
Read full day details
Begin in darkness, moving slowly up the switchbacks toward Stella Point on the crater rim. If conditions and your health allow, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The ascent is physically demanding, with cold, wind and thin air adding to the challenge.
After a short summit stop, descend to Barafu for food and rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The descent is long and can be hard on the knees. Summit timing, breaks and the overnight camp may change according to your guide’s assessment.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Complete your trek through the rainforest and return to Moshi.

After your final mountain breakfast, descend through the forest toward Mweka Gate. Lower sections can be muddy, so keep your poles and waterproofs close. Take your time on the slippery steps and enjoy the return to greener surroundings.
Complete the park exit formalities and receive the appropriate certificate if eligible. Say farewell to your mountain crew before the transfer to your Moshi hotel. A shower, a warm meal and a comfortable bed round off your expedition.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight: Moshi hotel (breakfast included next morning).
Elevations, distances and walking times are approximate. Conditions, camp positions and your pace can affect the daily schedule. Your guide may adjust the itinerary.

Umbwe Route FAQs
How difficult is the 6-day Umbwe Route?
It is one of Kilimanjaro’s most demanding trekking routes. The early trail is steep, and the rapid gain in sleeping altitude allows less time to acclimatize than a longer Lemosho or Northern Circuit itinerary.
Is Umbwe suitable for a first Kilimanjaro climb?
It is generally a less suitable first choice because of its steep, rapid ascent. Tell us about your trekking and altitude experience so we can help you compare it with a longer route.
Does this itinerary use the Western Breach?
No. This itinerary joins the Southern Circuit at Barranco, continues through Karanga to Barafu, and approaches Uhuru Peak via Stella Point. It descends on the Mweka trail.
How many nights are spent on the mountain?
There are five camping nights: Umbwe, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka. The two Moshi hotel nights are separate from your six mountain days.
When is a good time to climb?
January to early March and June to October are commonly chosen for relatively drier conditions. Mountain weather remains variable throughout the year. Contact us to discuss your preferred dates.
Is summit success guaranteed?
No. Altitude, weather and individual condition affect every climb. Your guide may recommend turning around or descending when continuing would be unsafe.
Can I book a private climb?
Yes. Contact Abdi Expeditions with your preferred dates, number of climbers and previous trekking experience to request a private expedition quotation.
